Odds, Spread, Moneyline, etc.

To understand Spread events, we'll use the example game below.

Example Betslip Matchup

The point spread is a wager on the margin of victory. Above the Panthers are -3 which means they are favored by 3 points. If you wager on that, the Panthers would need to win by 4 points or more.

To understand Moneyline events, we'll use the example game below.

Example Betslip Matchup

The moneyline is a wager on the winner of the game, straight up.

To understand Total events, we'll use the example game below.

Example Betslip Matchup

The total or over/under is a wager on the total points scored in a game, by both teams combined. In the example above the over under points is 50. If you wagered "over" you would be correct as 52 total points were scored.

To understand odds, we'll use the example game below.

Example Betslip Matchup

In American odds, a negative number is associated with the favored team whereas a positive number is associated with the underdog.

When looking at the moneyline above, the Panthers are -120 which means they're favored to win. The Eagles are +100 which means they're the underdog.

A wager of $100 on -110 odds would win $90.91 profit and your original $100 back.

A wager of $100 on +100 odds would win $100 profit and your original $100 back.

Oddsmakers like FanDuel, DraftKings, etc. will predict the outcome of the game based on the strength of the teams. Then sportsbooks will release odds that are likely to capture 50% of votes on each side.

Sportsbooks like FanDuel, DraftKings, etc. set the lines they offer. They're usually fairly similar when compared but will vary due to incentives by the bookie & their risk/reward threshold.

There could be many reasons for line movement. Weather or injuries can affect the outcomes of games so bookmakers will adjust lines due to these factors.

Sportsbooks goal is to make money. If they're able to line up a perfect 50/50 split on a wager then they will make money regardless of the outcome. It's possible they'll adjust lines to better align their risk/reward for events as well.

We rely on a third party company to provide us with odds from sportsbooks like FanDuel, DraftKings, Caesars, etc.

While odds are locked or changing at a sportsbook, those results can have a trickle down effect where we will be missing them.

If you run into missing values, please try again in a few minutes.

If you're noticing consistentaly missing values, please let us know.

Nate Silver has an article that goes more in depth on this and is worth the read.

Elo ratings are used to measure the skill of two teams.

To conceptalize this imagine two teams, Bears and Seahawks, both start with 1500 rating points. If they play each other and the Bears win 21-7 then the Bears would gain rating points and the Seakhawks would lose points.

It's a zero sum game where the new ratings would be 1550 points Bears & 1450 Seakawks. These ratings carry over from year to year and could be useful when trying to determine who the expected winner of a game will be.

The Elo ratings are usually about 60% accurate when determining the predicted winner of a game.
